NGC DESCRIPTION: BI Nummus, Issued as Caesar Late Empire: The Dominate

NGC GRADE: Choice Very Fine

ABOUT THE COIN:

Nummus were lower denomination copper coins issued by the Roman and Byzantine empires during Late Antiquity.  The word was also used during the later years of the Roman Republic and the early Empire, either as a general word for a coin, or to describe the sestertius, which was the standard unit for keeping accounts.

Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was Roman emperor from 310 to 313.  He became embroiled in the Civil wars of the Tetrarchy between rival claimants for control of the empire, in which he was defeated by Licinius.  A committed pagan, he engaged in one of the last persecutions of Christians, before issuing an edict of tolerance near his death.
