ABOUT THE COIN:
AE is an abbreviation or symbol for a base metal or base metal alloy, usually copper, brass or bronze. The abbreviation AE is derived from the Latin word aes. See also AR (silver) and AV (gold). AE is often used with a number indicating a coin 's size.
Hieron II was the Greek tyrant of Syracuse from 275 to 215 BC, and the illegitimate son of a Syracusan noble, Hierocles, who claimed descent from Gelon. He was a former general of Pyrrhus of Epirus and an important figure of the First Punic War. He figures in the story of famed thinker Archimedes shouting "Eureka".
